In short
THE APP has no user accounts, no ads and no tracking, and we collect no personal data through it. If you choose to submit a product, you upload photos of its packaging to us - anonymously and without personal information (see the section below).
Camera
The app uses the camera to read barcodes and ingredient lists (OCR) - both happen locally on your phone and are not sent anywhere - and for the optional product submission, where the photos you take are uploaded to us (see below).
Submitting products (optional)
If a product isn't found, or you want to correct it, you can choose to submit it. You take 3 photos (barcode, front, ingredient list), which are uploaded to our server so we can add the product to the database for the benefit of other users.
- Anonymous: we don't ask for or store name, account or contact details. Location data (EXIF) is removed from the images.
- Purpose: the images are used solely to create or correct the product in the product database.
- Moderation: submissions are reviewed manually before they're added. Images that don't show a product are rejected.
- Storage: if a submission is rejected, all images are deleted immediately. If it's approved, we keep only the front photo as the product image - the barcode and ingredient photos are deleted.
Deleting submitted images
Submissions are anonymous, but if you want a submitted image removed, email support@glutenscanner.info with the product name or barcode. We'll then find and delete the image.
Scan history
Your scan history (product name, barcode, gluten assessment and date) is stored only locally on your own phone. It's never sent to us or to third parties, and you can delete it in the app at any time.
Internet lookups
When you scan a product, the barcode (and in some cases the product name) is looked up - first in our own database at glutenscanner.info, and if the product isn't found there, with: Open Food Facts, Open Products Facts, Open Beauty Facts, Kassal.app, Salling Group, UPCitemdb and DuckDuckGo (web search). No information about you as a person is sent - only the product's barcode/name. The services' own privacy policies apply to their processing of the lookups.
Translation
Ingredient lists in other languages can be translated to Danish. The translation happens locally on your phone (Google ML Kit) and is not sent anywhere.
Error reports
If the app runs into a technical error, it automatically sends a short, anonymous error report to us - the error message, the technical stack, the app version and the device type (e.g. Android) - so we can find and fix it. The report contains no personal data and is used solely to improve the app's stability. We do not store your IP address.
The website glutenscanner.info
The app and the website are not the same thing. The app measures nothing — it contains no analytics or advertising tools at all. The website uses Google Ads to measure how many people find their way to the app through our adverts. That only happens if you say yes in the box shown on your first visit. Say no — or don't answer at all — and nothing is set; the site works exactly as before. Your choice is stored locally in your browser so you aren't asked again.
Data sources
Some of the product data comes from Open Food Facts and is used under the Open Database License (ODbL).
Permissions
- Camera: barcodes, ingredient lists (OCR) and product submission
- Internet: looking up product information and submissions
- Vibration: confirmation when a barcode is read
- Network state: used by the libraries the app builds on (including Google ML Kit) to check whether the phone is online. No information about your network is collected
Disclaimer
GlutenScanner is a helper tool, not medical advice. The assessments are based on databases and automated lookups, which may be incomplete or outdated. Always read the ingredient list on the packaging yourself, especially with coeliac disease or severe gluten intolerance.
